Q9Which toeboard installation meets 1926.451(h)(4)(ii)?
- A 3-3/8-in solid steel toe plate fixed with 1/4-in clearance above the deck
- A 1×4 board (3-1/2 in actual) fixed with 3/8-in clearance above the deck
- A 1×4 board ripped to 3-1/4 in and fixed tight to the deck
- A 6-in toe plate with 1-1/4-in diameter holes, fixed tight to the deck
Answer: A 3-3/8-in solid steel toe plate fixed with 1/4-in clearance above the deck. Height is measured from the toeboard's top edge to the walking/working surface: 3-3/8 + 1/4 = 3-5/8 in ≥ 3-1/2 in, with clearance 1/4 in, so it complies although the plate itself is under 3-1/2 in. The 1×4 with 3/8-in clearance exceeds the 1/4-in limit; the ripped board tight to the deck is only 3-1/4 in high; 1-1/4-in holes exceed the 1-in maximum opening. 29 CFR 1926.451(h)(4)(ii). Verify against the latest edition.

Inspection scenarios
Q10Walk me through how you inspect a 20 m independent scaffold.
A strong answer covers:
- Paperwork first: the design or drawing, the last tag and its date.
- From the ground up: ground, sills, base plates, screwjack extension.
- Standards plumb, ledgers and transoms, bracing, then ties against the tie pattern.
- Every platform: fully boarded, overhangs, gaps, guardrails, toe boards.
- Access: ladders, landings, gates. Then the load class against the job, and the tag.
Tip: Say it in the order you walk it. Interviewers listen for a sequence, not a list of words.
Q11You find a tie missing on a scaffold that is in use. What do you do?
A strong answer covers:
- Get people off and change the tag status at once.
- Tell the scaffold supervisor; the scaffolders refit it, not the users.
- Inspect again before it goes back into use, and record it.
Q12A supervisor asks you to sign a green tag on a scaffold you are not happy with.
A strong answer covers:
- You inspect independently; your signature means you checked it.
- List the defects in writing and what closes each one.
- Escalate if pressure continues. You do not sign.
Q13What do you check after a storm?
A strong answer covers:
- Nobody goes up before the inspection.
- Ties, base slip, sheeting and netting, loose boards and fittings.
- Record it as an inspection after an event, separate from the routine one.
Q14How do you inspect a mobile tower?
A strong answer covers:
- Height against the base limit for a tower on casters.
- Casters locked, outriggers if fitted, ground level and firm.
- Guardrails, toe boards, internal access, and nobody on it while it moves.
About you
Q15Tell me about a serious defect you found.
A strong answer covers:
- What it was and how you spotted it.
- What you did in the first ten minutes.
- What changed on site afterwards.
Q16How do you keep track of tags across a big site?
A strong answer covers:
- A register with tag status, type, location and next inspection date.
- A weekly walk of everything due.
- Reporting overdue tags before they expire.
Tip: On Saudi Aramco sites the erector keeps a tracking system of bi-weekly inspections (GI 8.001 §5.5.2; verify against the latest edition).
Technical answers come from the AL-YASSIN question banks, with the document each one is based on; verify against the latest edition and the rules of the project you are applying to. Scenario answers are practice guidance, not a script. AL-YASSIN is independent and not endorsed by Saudi Aramco, OSHA, BSI or NASC.
How to answer the "tell me about a time" questions
Use four short parts: the situation (where, what scaffold, how high), the task (what you had to decide), the action (what you did, in order) and the result (what changed, with a number if you have one: days saved, findings closed, zero incidents on that job). Keep it under two minutes. Interviewers in this trade listen for one thing above all: that you stop the job when it is not safe, and then find a way to finish it.

Questions
What is asked in a scaffold inspector interview?
Tag colours and what each allows, how long a tag is valid, the key numbers (toprail height, tie spacing, base plates, screwjack extension, tower height-to-base) and how you inspect a scaffold from paperwork to platform. Most panels also test whether you will refuse to sign under pressure.
What does a yellow scaffold tag mean on Saudi Aramco sites?
A guardrail or plank cannot be fitted: harness users only, with independent anchors, for 2 weeks at most (GI 8.001 (2025) §9). Verify against the latest edition.
How often must a scaffold be inspected?
It depends on the rules that apply: OSHA before each work shift, the UK at least every 7 days and after changes or bad weather, Saudi Aramco tags at most every 2 weeks with a pre-use check each shift. See the comparison at alyassinscaffold.com/standards/scaffold-inspection-frequency/.
