Sample questions
Three questions from the bank, with the answer, the working and the reference. The real paper has 50.
Q1Which toeboard installation meets 1926.451(h)(4)(ii)?
- A 3-3/8-in solid steel toe plate fixed with 1/4-in clearance above the deck
- A 1×4 board (3-1/2 in actual) fixed with 3/8-in clearance above the deck
- A 1×4 board ripped to 3-1/4 in and fixed tight to the deck
- A 6-in toe plate with 1-1/4-in diameter holes, fixed tight to the deck
Answer: A 3-3/8-in solid steel toe plate fixed with 1/4-in clearance above the deck. Height is measured from the toeboard's top edge to the walking/working surface: 3-3/8 + 1/4 = 3-5/8 in ≥ 3-1/2 in, with clearance 1/4 in, so it complies although the plate itself is under 3-1/2 in. The 1×4 with 3/8-in clearance exceeds the 1/4-in limit; the ripped board tight to the deck is only 3-1/4 in high; 1-1/4-in holes exceed the 1-in maximum opening. 29 CFR 1926.451(h)(4)(ii). Verify against the latest edition.
Q2Which of these platforms meets the minimum width in 1926.451(b)(2)?
- Ladder jack scaffold: one 2×12 plank, 11-1/4 in wide
- Pump jack scaffold: two 2×8 planks, 7-1/4 in each
- Frame scaffold: two fabricated planks, 8 in each
- Top plate bracket scaffold: one 2×10 plank, 9-1/4 in wide
Answer: Pump jack scaffold: two 2×8 planks, 7-1/4 in each. The general minimum is 18 in; ladder jack, top plate bracket and pump jack scaffolds may be 12 in. Pump jack: 2 × 7.25 = 14.5 in ≥ 12 in. The ladder jack (11.25 in) and top plate bracket (9.25 in) platforms are under 12 in; the frame scaffold's 16 in is under 18 in. Nominal lumber sizes overstate actual widths. 29 CFR 1926.451(b)(2), (b)(2)(i). Verify against the latest edition.
Q3Riser heights are measured on a scaffold stair tower. Which flight complies with the riser uniformity rule?
- Top flight: risers of 8, 8, 8-3/8 and 8 in to the top landing
- Middle flight: risers of 7-7/8, 8, 8-1/8 and 8-1/4 in between landings
- Lowest flight: ground step 10 in, the rest 7-3/4 to 7-7/8 in
- Middle flight: first step above a landing 9 in, the rest 8 in
Answer: Lowest flight: ground step 10 in, the rest 7-3/4 to 7-7/8 in. Risers must be uniform within 1/4 in in each flight. The top flight and the 7-7/8 to 8-1/4 in middle flight each vary by 3/8 in. Greater variation is allowed only for the top and bottom steps of the entire stair system, so the 10 in ground-level step is acceptable, but a 9 in step at an intermediate landing is not. 29 CFR 1926.451(e)(4)(xiii). Verify against the latest edition.
Questions
Who can sit this exam?
Anyone. It is written for scaffold supervisors, foremen and competent persons who work to US federal OSHA construction rules. There is no degree check; the certificate is issued when you pass in one timed sitting.
Is this an official OSHA exam or card?
No. It is an independent AL-YASSIN exam based on US federal OSHA construction scaffold rules, 29 CFR 1926.450-454 (Subpart L), with 1926.502(d) for personal fall arrest systems. It is not issued, approved or endorsed by OSHA or the US Department of Labor, and it does not replace any card or training your employer or the law requires.
How many questions, and how long?
50 questions in 50 minutes, one sitting, drawn fresh from a bank of 450 questions. Each question has its own time and you cannot go back. Pass 70%, merit 85%.
How hard is it?
Hard on purpose. Most questions are calculations or site scenarios where you must apply two or more rules; recall questions are few. Someone who only memorised numbers should not pass.
What language are the questions in?
English, with a translation line under every question and answer in the language you choose: العربية, Español, Filipino (draft), اردو (draft), हिन्दी (draft). You can change the language during the paper. The English text is the one that is marked. Draft translations have not yet been checked by a native speaker.
What does it cost?

How long is the certificate valid?
One year. Renew it free by passing the exam again. Anyone can check a certificate by its number or QR code at alyassinscaffold.com/verify.
