How it works

  1. 1

    Sit it in one go

50 questions, 50 minutes, on your phone or computer. Each question has its own time; no going back. Leaving the page is recorded; the third time ends the paper.

  2. 2

Your name and email at the end. The score and the domain breakdown arrive free by email.

  3. 3

    Pass at 70%

You get a certificate with a number and a QR code. Valid one year, renewed free by passing again.

  4. 4

    Challenge a colleague

Every result comes with a challenge link. Exam starts from your link are counted to you; the top 3 each month get a free full review.

Sample questions

Three questions from the bank, with the answer, the working and the reference. The real paper has 50.

Q1Four boards are checked against their described lengths. Which one is outside the BS 2482 length tolerance?
  1. 2.40 m board measuring 2.42 m
  2. 3.00 m board measuring 2.97 m
  3. 3.90 m board measuring 3.88 m
  4. 4.20 m board measuring 4.16 m

Answer: 3.00 m board measuring 2.97 m. Length tolerance is ± 25 mm, or ± 50 mm for boards longer than 3.9 m. The 3.00 m board is 30 mm short, outside ± 25 mm. The 4.20 m board is 40 mm short but within ± 50 mm; the 3.90 m (−20 mm) and 2.40 m (+20 mm) boards are within ± 25 mm. BS 2482:2009 5. Verify against the latest edition.

Q2Four base plates are offered for a scaffold. Which one meets the BS EN 12811-1 minimum end-plate area and minimum width?
  1. 125 × 125 mm square plate
  2. 120 × 120 mm square plate
  3. 100 × 160 mm rectangular plate
  4. 130 mm diameter round plate

Answer: 125 × 125 mm square plate. Minimum area 150 cm² and minimum width 120 mm. 125 × 125 = 156 cm², 125 mm wide: compliant. 120 × 120 = 144 cm² is too small; 100 × 160 = 160 cm² but only 100 mm wide; a 130 mm round plate gives π × 6.5² = 133 cm². BS EN 12811-1:2003 5.7.1. Verify against the latest edition.

Q3Which of the BS EN 12811-1 load class 4 working-area service loads produces the highest local pressure on a platform unit?
  1. 3.00 kN/m² (q1)
  2. 5.00 kN/m² (q2)
  3. 12.0 kN/m² (F1)
  4. 25.0 kN/m² (F2)

Answer: 25.0 kN/m² (F2). F1 = 3.0 kN on 0.5 × 0.5 m = 0.25 m² gives 12 kN/m². F2 = 1.0 kN on 0.2 × 0.2 m = 0.04 m² gives 25 kN/m², the highest local pressure, which is why each platform unit is checked for it separately. q1 (3.0) and q2 (5.0) are far lower but act over larger areas. BS EN 12811-1:2003 6.2.2.2 to 6.2.2.4, Table 3 (verify against the latest edition).

Questions

Who can sit this exam?

Anyone. It is written for scaffold supervisors and chargehands who work to European and UK practice, anywhere in the world. There is no degree check; the certificate is issued when you pass in one timed sitting.

Is this an official BSI or NASC exam or card?

No. It is an independent AL-YASSIN exam based on BS EN 12811-1, NASC TG20 (TG20:13 used for this bank; check TG20:21), BS 2482 and the UK Work at Height Regulations 2005. It is not issued, approved or endorsed by BSI, NASC or CISRS, and it does not replace any card or training your employer or the law requires.

How many questions, and how long?

50 questions in 50 minutes, one sitting, drawn fresh from a bank of 437 questions. Each question has its own time and you cannot go back. Pass 70%, merit 85%.

How hard is it?

Hard on purpose. Most questions are calculations or site scenarios where you must apply two or more rules; recall questions are few. Someone who only memorised numbers should not pass.

What language are the questions in?

English, with a translation line under every question and answer in the language you choose: العربية, اردو (draft). You can change the language during the paper. The English text is the one that is marked. Draft translations have not yet been checked by a native speaker.

What does it cost?

Sitting the exam, seeing your score and getting the certificate when you pass are free. A full review that shows every mistake with the right answer, the working and the reference costs USD 100 (15 days of access).

How long is the certificate valid?

One year. Renew it free by passing the exam again. Anyone can check a certificate by its number or QR code at alyassinscaffold.com/verify.
