Sample questions
Three questions from the bank, with the answer and the reference. The real paper has 30.
Q1You are planning harness work on a pipe-rack scaffold for next week. When must the rescue plan be in place?
- Once more than ten workers on the job are using harnesses
- Before any work at height starts, as part of planning the job
- Within one day of the scaffold receiving its green tag
- After the first fall-arrest incident on the job has been reported to HSE
Answer: Before any work at height starts, as part of planning the job Rescue is part of planning work at height, so the plan and resources must exist before work starts. Waiting for an incident or a headcount means nobody is ready when a fall happens. Work at Height Regulations 2005 (UK). Verify against the latest edition.
Q2A scaffolder's fall has been arrested and he is hanging still in his harness. Why must rescue start without delay?
- The anchor point gets overloaded the longer he hangs there
- The energy absorber on the lanyard will fail if it stays loaded for long
- Hanging still can cause fainting and can become life-threatening
- The full-body harness will slowly slide off his shoulders
Answer: Hanging still can cause fainting and can become life-threatening Motionless suspension in a harness can lead to suspension intolerance: pooling of blood in the legs, fainting and possibly death. The equipment is designed to hold him; the danger is to his body. HSE guidance on suspension trauma / rescue. Verify against the latest edition.
Q3Your plan uses a pre-rigged rescue system connected between the anchor and the worker's lanyard. What is its main advantage?
- He can be lowered or raised from a safe place, with no rescuer going to him
- It removes the need for trained rescuers to be present at the work location
- It lets the worker work without a harness inside the guardrail
- It stops a fall before the lanyard energy absorber deploys
Answer: He can be lowered or raised from a safe place, with no rescuer going to him Pre-rigged systems let the rescuer operate the device from the platform or ground, so the casualty is recovered quickly and no rescuer is exposed. Trained operators are still required. NASC rescue planning guidance. Verify against the latest edition.
