Civil and mechanical engineers who receive or control scaffold work permits. Certificate after a degree or SCE check.

What the exam covers

Each paper is drawn fresh from the bank across these domains, plus the 10-question engineering core.

  • Permit system scope for scaffold work
  • Roles, certification and responsibilities
  • Joint site inspection, hazard analysis and writing the permit
  • Gas testing and atmospheric limits
  • Hot work interfaces and fire prevention around scaffolds
  • Scaffolds in confined spaces
  • Isolation, energy and live-equipment hazards near scaffolds
  • Permit duration, renewal, transfer, extension, suspension and closure
  • Scaffold permit scenarios and interfaces

How it works

  1. 1

    Sit it in one go

50 questions, 50 minutes, on your phone or computer. Leaving the page is recorded; the third time ends the paper.

  2. 2

Your name and email at the end. The score and topic breakdown arrive free by email.

  3. 3

    Pass at 70%

You get a certificate with a number and a QR code, after we check your engineering degree or SCE membership. Valid one year, renewed free by passing again.

  4. 4

    Challenge a colleague

Every result comes with a challenge link. Exam starts from your link are counted to you; the top 3 each month get a free full review.

Sample questions

Three questions in the style of the exam, with the answer and the reference. The real paper has 50 and is harder.

Q1Erecting a tube-and-coupler scaffold with hand spanners in a restricted area. Which permit?
  1. Hot Work, Form 9873-2
  2. Cold Work, Form 9873-3
  3. Confined Space Entry, Form 9873-4
  4. Line Break, Form 9873-1

Answer: Cold Work, Form 9873-3. CSM I-4 lists scaffold erection or dismantling under the Cold Work Permit (Form 9873-3, blue). An engine, a grinder or an unrated tool makes it hot work. CSM I-4 (July 2017) 4.5.1. Verify against the latest edition.

Q2Top lift readings: O2 20.6%, LEL 2%, H2S 4 ppm. Can a welder tack a bracket there?
  1. Yes, every reading is normal
  2. Yes, with a fire watch
  3. No: hot work needs 0% LEL
  4. Only in breathing apparatus

Answer: No: hot work needs 0% LEL. Hot work is not permitted above 0% LEL. Cold scaffold work may go on: all readings are in the no-respirator band. CSM I-4 4.10.4; CSM I-6 (December 2025) 6.7.9. Verify against the latest edition.

Q3A detector reads 1,050 ppm of a gas whose LEL is 2.1% by volume. What is the %LEL?
  1. 1%
  2. 5%
  3. 10%
  4. 21%

Answer: 5%. LEL = 2.1 × 10,000 = 21,000 ppm; 1,050 ÷ 21,000 = 5% LEL: breathing apparatus for the crew, no hot work. CSM I-6 6.7.9; CSM I-4 4.10.4–4.10.5. Verify against the latest edition.

How many questions, and how long?

50 questions in 50 minutes, one sitting, drawn fresh from a bank of 380 questions. The pass mark is 70%.

What does it cost?

Sitting the exam, seeing your score and getting the certificate when you pass are free. A full review that shows every mistake with the right answer and the reference costs USD 100 (15 days of access).

What language are the questions in?

English, like the Saudi Aramco documents the exam follows. Role exams allow a non-programmable or scientific calculator; all data you need is in the question.
