Formwork & Falsework Design Engineer exam
Free, 50 questions in 50 minutes, open to everyone. Concrete pressure (CIRIA Report 108 method), wall and column forms, soffit and falsework loads, props and towers, lateral stability, foundations, striking and reshoring, BS 5975 procedures and special formwork. Pass with 70% and get a certificate anyone can verify online.
Independent exam based on Concrete Society "Formwork: a guide to good practice" (3rd ed., with the CIRIA Report 108 method), BS 5975, BS EN 12812 and ACI 347.2R. Not issued or endorsed by any standards body or regulator. Questions in English; optional translation: العربية, اردو (draft).
What the exam covers
Each paper is drawn fresh from the bank across these 10 domains.
- Concrete pressure on vertical formwork
- Wall and column formwork design
- Soffit formwork and falsework loads
- Props, towers and their capacities
- Lateral stability
- Foundations for falsework
- Striking, backpropping and reshoring
- Temporary works procedures (BS 5975)
- Inspection, tolerances and failure modes
- Special formwork
How it works
- 1
Sit it in one go
50 questions, 50 minutes, on your phone or computer. Each question has its own time; no going back. Leaving the page is recorded; the third time ends the paper.
- 2
Your name and email at the end. The score and the domain breakdown arrive free by email.
- 3
Pass at 70%
You get a certificate with a number and a QR code. Valid one year, renewed free by passing again.
- 4
Challenge a colleague
Every result comes with a challenge link. Exam starts from your link are counted to you; the top 3 each month get a free full review.
Sample questions
Three questions from the bank, with the answer, the working and the reference. The real paper has 50.
Q1A loose base jack is 760 mm long. Under BS EN 12812, what minimum length of the jack must sit inside the tube?
- 150 mm
- 190 mm
- 228 mm
- 380 mm
Answer: 190 mm. The overlap must be the greater of 25% of the jack length and 150 mm: 0.25 × 760 = 190 mm, which exceeds 150 mm, so 190 mm governs. 150 mm is only the lower bound; 228 mm (30%) and 380 mm (half the jack) are not the rule. Short overlap increases the angular imperfection at the joint. BS EN 12812:2004 7.3.2, 9.3.2.1 (verify against BS EN 12812:2008).
Q2A wall form is 5.0 m high; this pour stops at 3.5 m. CEM I, no admixture, 25 kN/m³, 15°C, rate of rise 2.0 m/h. What Pmax applies to this pour?
- 50.0 kN/m²
- 54.5 kN/m²
- 87.5 kN/m²
- 125 kN/m²
Answer: 54.5 kN/m². Use the form height H = 5.0 m in the formula: 25[1.414 + 0.30×1.349×√(5 − 1.414)] = 25×2.180 = 54.5, below D×h = 87.5 so it governs. 50.0 wrongly uses the pour height 3.5 m as H (unconservative); 87.5 and 125 are fluid heads for h and H. Q3A wall form weighing 30 kN is lifted by a two-leg sling with 70° between the legs, hook centred over the centre of gravity. What is the tension in each leg?
- 15.0 kN
- 18.3 kN
- 26.2 kN
- 43.9 kN
Answer: 18.3 kN. Each leg is 35° from vertical: T = W/(2cos35°) = 30/1.638 = 18.3 kN. 15.0 ignores the angle; 43.9 uses the full 70° in the cosine; 26.2 uses sin35°. Concrete Society Formwork guide 3rd ed., Section 5.9.3.1 and Table 35. Verify against the latest edition.
Questions
Who can sit this exam?
Anyone. It is written for engineers who design or check formwork and falsework. There is no degree check; the certificate is issued when you pass in one timed sitting.
Is this an official BSI or Concrete Society exam or card?
No. It is an independent AL-YASSIN exam based on Concrete Society "Formwork: a guide to good practice" (3rd ed., with the CIRIA Report 108 method), BS 5975, BS EN 12812 and ACI 347.2R. It is not issued, approved or endorsed by BSI, the Concrete Society, CIRIA or ACI, and it does not replace any card or training your employer or the law requires.
How many questions, and how long?
50 questions in 50 minutes, one sitting, drawn fresh from a bank of 437 questions. Each question has its own time and you cannot go back. Pass 70%, merit 85%.
How hard is it?
Hard on purpose. Most questions are calculations or site scenarios where you must apply two or more rules; recall questions are few. Someone who only memorised numbers should not pass.
What language are the questions in?
English, with a translation line under every question and answer in the language you choose: العربية, اردو (draft). You can change the language during the paper. The English text is the one that is marked. Draft translations have not yet been checked by a native speaker.
What does it cost?
Sitting the exam, seeing your score and getting the certificate when you pass are free. A full review that shows every mistake with the right answer, the working and the reference costs USD 100 (15 days of access).
How long is the certificate valid?
One year. Renew it free by passing the exam again. Anyone can check a certificate by its number or QR code at alyassinscaffold.com/verify.
